Germany. 16th century.
Sculpture, Pietà
Carved in three-quarter rounds, slightly flattened on the back. Parts of the older polychrome paintwork have been lost. Seated on a profiled, partially marbled throne. The matronly dressed Virgin Mary holds the body of her son, bearing the stigmata, in her lap, supporting his slumped head with her hand and pressing his arm to her breast. The figure derives its power from the contrast between the pale, naked body of Christ and the richly draped red and blue garments of Mary, gaining its expressiveness precisely through its folk-inspired style. Damage from age and the removal of the paint. 47 x 25 x 16 cm. Provenance: Oetker Collection, Krefeld.
