Rhenish. Around 1500
Sculpture, Mourning Mary
Limewood, carved in three-quarter round, the reverse only cursorily worked. Remnants of an older polychrome paint and gilding, these have been overpainted. A full-figure statue of the saint, slightly turned to the side, stands on a round base. Her gaze lowered, she holds her gathered headscarf in her hand to dry her tears. Over her pleated and belted dress, a wide cloak is draped over her head and gathered up in front of her body, defining the sculpture's three-dimensionality. The figure was probably originally part of a crucifixion group. An old paper label with the handwritten number 366 is affixed to the reverse. Damage from age and paint loss. Slight wormholes on the reverse. Height 77.5 cm. Provenance: Oetker Collection, Krefeld.
