Wooden sculpture. Height: 16.5 cm. Inscribed under the base: GW 301/33 (black textile marker) and PSC PTD (stamped). Also illegibly signed and dated: 54 (pencil). The 'Zakopane School' refers to an influential movement in Polish art and architecture around the turn of the 20th century. Named after the mountain town of Zakopane at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, it combined regional craft traditions with modern artistic ideas. Decorative wooden architecture, ornamental carvings, and motifs from the folk culture of the Gorals are characteristic. Particularly in architecture, a distinctive style developed that expresses national identity and a connection to nature. The Zakopane School is considered today an important example of the search for an independent, 'Polish' formal language in art and design.
