Alfred Arndt
Folding chair for the Volkshaus, Probstzella
Designed in 1927/28 for the Haus des Volkes (People's House) in Probstzella. Manufactured by the Itting metalworking shop, Probstzella, in 1927/28. Chrome-plated tubular steel, black-stained plywood. 93 x 41 x 51 cm.
This chair comes from the Haus des Volkes (People's House) in Probstzella. A sticker reading "Rat der Gemeinde / Probstzella" (Community Council / Probstzella) with an inventory number is affixed to the center of the backrest.
Alfred Arndt's folding chair is a further development of Marcel Breuer's model, which was sold under the type designation B8. According to the Arndt family, these chairs, which were installed in large numbers in the Haus des Volkes (People's House), were to be manufactured by the Bauhaus. However, the asking price was too high for the client, Franz Itting, so he had them manufactured in his own small metalworking shop.
