Jean Holthausen became a master craftsman in 1764. Little is known about his seemingly short career, partly because only a few pieces of furniture by his hand are known to exist. Like most French cabinetmakers of his time, he originally came from Germany. He worked on the Rue Traversière in Paris. Although Holthausen was active from the reign of Louis XV through the reign of Louis XVI, many of his pieces of furniture retained the influence of the Régence style, as is evident in the present commode.

Provenance: From the estate of the actor Wolfgang Düring.
