Paul Jenkins* (1932 - 2012)
'Phenomena Dervish Talisman', 1969
Oil on canvas, 121 x 161 cm, signed, inscribed, and dated on the reverse, top of the stretcher: Paul Jenkins. 1969.
Paul Jenkins is one of the leading figures of American Abstract Expressionism. His multifaceted work is characterized by an intense exploration of color, light, and movement. In his paintings, he allowed fluid masses of paint to glide across the canvas, layering and directing them without fully controlling their inherent movement. Jenkins understood color not merely as a compositional tool, but as an independent, almost physical force. His characteristic, transparently luminous fields of color combine spontaneity with a concentrated, poetic visual language. Influenced by Eastern philosophy, observation of nature, and the principle of chance, Jenkins developed a distinctive form of abstract painting in which process and perception are equally central.
