Otto Piene* (1928 - 2014)
Untitled (Fire Gouache), 2003

Mixed media on cardboard. 50 x 43.5 cm. Signed and dated lower right: Piene 03. Framed under glass and described as such. As a co-founder of the ZERO artists' group, Otto Piene is considered one of the most important innovators of art after 1945. Since the late 1950s, he has explored the elemental forces of fire, smoke, and light, which he directly incorporated into his artistic process. In his fire gouaches, the flame becomes a co-creator of the image: soot, heat, and pigments create traces and structures that emerge between conscious control and chance. The works from 2002 and 2003 continue Piene's lifelong exploration of energy, movement, and transformation. The image appears not merely as the result of painterly creation, but as the material testimony of a dynamic process. Thus, the fire gouaches combine the immediacy of the creation process with the permanence of the artwork and impressively illustrate Piene's visionary understanding of an art that transcends traditional painting.
