This Marilyn edition is a silkscreen print by Sunday B. Morning, based on Andy Warhol's original Marilyn series from 1967. He had chosen as his basis a promotional photograph by Gene Kornman for the film Niagara (1953). The print was published in different colors than the original series in Belgium by Sunday B. Morning. Initially, Warhol had agreed to the project by his friends and the owners of the printing house, but then decided against collaborating. Sunday B. Morning nevertheless went ahead with the publication, stamping the reverses with 'published by Sunday B. Morning' and 'fill in your own signature'. Warhol's friendship with the founders later prompted him to sign some copies with the ironic inscription 'this is not by me, Andy Warhol'. This gesture creates a playful ambivalence between authorship and authenticity, making the question of authorship itself an integral part of the work. The few copies personally signed by Warhol are now highly sought after by collectors and have acquired considerable value. Sunday B. Morning's Marilyn prints thus expand Warhol's ongoing exploration of reproduction, mass production, and the circulation of images. Sunday B. Morning's Marilyn prints are documented in Andy Warhol's catalogue raisonné of prints (Feldman/Schellmann).
