Ron Arad
Rare Split Chair

Design circa 1989. Two-part construction in cast aluminum and European walnut. 76 x 60/64 x 55 cm.

This example comes from a very small series of approximately six pieces, produced by Poltronova in Italy. The chair offered here was purchased directly by Pesch in Cologne. Many thanks to Caroline Thorman from Ron Arad Studio and Ammann Gallery provided clarifying information

The designer and artist Ron Arad is one of the most influential figures in contemporary furniture design. His work is characterized by an experimental exploration of material, form, and construction, questioning both industrial processes and traditional furniture typologies.

The 'Split Chair' occupies a special place within his oeuvre. As a radical reinterpretation of the chair, Arad deconstructs the familiar form into a dynamic, fragmented structure that combines function and sculpture.
The object exemplifies his design approach, which deliberately blurs the boundaries between design and art. In its experimental openness, it points to central themes in Arad's work: transformation, deconstruction, and the extension of the functional object to an autonomous plastic form.
