Studio scenes are a frequent feature in the work of Pablo Picasso. They depict the painter or sculptor, the model, sculptures, or, as in the present work, only the model and two sculptures: a seated figure and a head on a stele. The live, nude model lies dreamily on a sofa behind the primal female or maternal figure, creating a connection between the two sculptures with her body and arms. The artist himself is also present in his imagination: his hidden, laurel-wreathed portrait can be discerned in the wreathed head.
