Tony WH Wong (1948–2012) was a Chinese-American artist who explored themes such as loneliness, love, and loss in his figurative paintings and sculptures. Born in Guangdong, he lived and worked in New York. His works blend American folklore with Chinese mythology and often depict dreamlike scenes. A characteristic feature is his impasto technique, which is thickly applied in dense layers and emphasizes the physicality of the figures—as in the present painting 'Naked Man,' 1981—with particular force. Trained in Chicago and Berkeley, he worked with oil pastels, painting, and sculpture. In 1984, he represented the USA at the Venice Biennale. Numerous exhibitions in the USA and Taiwan attest to his international presence. Wong died in New York in 2012.
