Sketch of chimpanzee and lovers
A double-sided work with a standing monkey and a pair of lovers on brown cardboard for the children of Karl Ernst Osthaus. 24 x 12.7 cm. The works were created at the beginning of the 20th century in Hagen, where Rohlfs had been living since 1901 at the invitation of his patron. He was closely associated with the Osthaus family and created his drawings and watercolors spontaneously on any available paper - often while telling fairy tales to the Osthaus children. Watercolor drawing on lightweight cardboard. Provenance: Collection of Karl Ernst Osthaus (1874–1921), Hagen, Collection of Eberhard Osthaus, Worpswede. Thereafter in the possession of the family's heirs.
