Gerhard Hoehme* (1920 - 1989)
Untitled, 1959
Mixed media on cardboard, on canvas. 50 x 70 cm (cardboard). Signed and dated lower right: G Hoehme (19)59 (pencil). Typographically inscribed on an adhesive label on the verso: Gerhard Hoehme / O.T. / 1959 / Mischtechnik/Karton / 50 x 70 cm. Framed in a shadow gap frame and inscribed accordingly.
This work, created in 1959, testifies to Hoehme's intensive preoccupation with the characteristics and powers of color, which he understood as a living process. The expressive gesture and the open structure of the picture surface reveal the artistic ambition that made him a key figure in abstract art and Art Informel in Germany. However, color itself remained crucial for Hoehme, which he understood as a moving, space-expanding substance, while traditional categories such as surface and form had little significance for him. In 1959 he was also represented at the documenta II in Kassel, which impressively underlines his early recognition in the international art scene.
