Large copper vase from the workshop of Ando Jubei
Circa 1900. Copper. Ando workshop. In the style of a large, upwardly widening melon-shaped pot with a flat base and a short neck with a protruding lip. The body decorated with hammered decoration (moriage) on a copper ground with plum blossom branches in low relief in colored enamel. 37 x 38 cm. The base is engraved with "Ando zo" and the monogram of another craftsman working in the Ando workshop. Above the Ando signature is the four-leaf coat of arms (mon) of the Ando family. There is also a later engraved inscription referring to 1938, when the vase was awarded second prize at the Kokura horse races held that spring. Provenance: Acquired from Gregg Baker Asian Art, London. The Ando workshop was founded in 1881 in Nagoya by Ando Jubei. The craftsman became famous for introducing various innovative cloisonné techniques. The Ando workshop still exists today and is considered the longest-standing cloisonné company in Japan.
