Denis Louis Ancellet (c. 1740–1823) is considered one of the most important French cabinetmakers of his time. He worked during the late Louis XV and especially in the Louis XVI style. His workshop was initially located on the Rue de Charenton and, from 1780, on the Rue Saint-Nicolas in Paris. His furniture is characterized by the use of high-quality mahogany and walnut, often further embellished with fire-gilded bronze or ebony inlays. Ancellet was particularly known for his elegant gaming tables and sophisticated architect's tables. His work was so highly regarded that the Royal Furniture Department (Garde-meuble de la Couronne) commissioned around sixty pieces of furniture from him for the Château de Saint-Cloud.
