The German painter Ulrich Erben (born 1940 in Düsseldorf) is one of the leading figures of analytical and color-focused abstract painting in Germany since the 1960s. After studying at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and spending extended periods in Italy, Erben developed a consistently reduced visual language concentrated on color, surface, and spatial effect. His paintings are characterized by clear geometric structures, precisely placed fields of color, and a subtle balance of light and space. In seemingly simple compositions, an intense painterly tension unfolds, arising from minimal shifts in proportion, hue, and rhythm. Since the 1970s, Erben has exhibited internationally and, as a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, influenced a younger generation of artists for decades.
