Nuremberg
Beaked jug, in the style of the 17th century.

Cast and engraved pewter. Cylindrical body on a high, profiled base. Beneath the angular, projecting, and covered spout is a three-dimensional relief portrait of a genii's head. The domed hinged lid features a spherical thumb rest and a medallion relief on its upper surface depicting a crowned emperor on horseback, with the coat of arms of Nuremberg below. On each side of the body is a milk glass plaque set in pewter, painted with half-portraits of 'D: M: Luther' and 'CAT. V. BORA' with their respective coats of arms. Between the two portraits, beneath the spout, is an engraved inscription within a laurel wreath: 'NOW/LIGHT THIS/LIGHT US 100/YEARS/THIS IS STILL FORTH, GOD/PRESERVE US', along with the year 1642. On the inside of the base is another relief medallion depicting the Resurrection of Christ. Height 24.5 cm.
