Alfred Hermann Helberger (1871 - 1946)
Norwegian landscape, 1916
Oil on canvas. 85 x 105 cm. Signed and dated lower right: A. Helberger (19)16 (oil). Framed and described as such.
The German painter and graphic artist Alfred Hermann Helberger was born in Eberstadt in 1871 and worked primarily in Berlin. His artistic training began in 1889 at the Städel Art Institute and continued at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under Gustav Schönleber, among others. Starting from academic naturalism, Helberger developed an increasingly color-intensive landscape style influenced by Impressionism and later also by Fauvism. Numerous study trips—including to Norway, Italy, and Brazil—profoundly shaped his work; Nordic coastal and fjord landscapes are among his characteristic motifs. From the turn of the century, Helberger was a regular presence in the Berlin art scene and participated in important exhibitions, including the Great Berlin Art Exhibitions. His works combine atmospheric landscape depictions with expressive color and are exemplary of the development of German landscape painting in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century.
