Pair of Empire Recamiers, 19th century
Mahogany, solid and veneered. The corner-wrapping backrest features volutes that curve upwards at each edge. The seat is semicircular at the narrow ends and rests on angular, tapered, curved legs with small volutes and sabots in the form of lion's paws, made of fire-gilded bronze. The straight apron is trimmed with a fine profile at the top and bottom, the lower apron further adorned with an applied, gilded bead molding. The entire frame is decorated with ornamental fittings in fire-gilded bronze, with a flower-shaped medallion on each long side between side bars featuring volutes and leaves.
The backrest also features a medallion with leaf volutes, the motif being repeated in a smaller scale in the upper curve of the backrest. The backrest struts are also decorated with gilded bead molding. The legs rest on casters concealed from view. Modern upholstery in cream-colored raw silk. 100 x 150 x 77 cm, seat height 45 cm.
