Creussen, 17th century
Large Apostle Tankard

Brown, salt-glazed stoneware with polychrome enamel decoration. The coin lid is made of silver. Between beaded rings with relief ornamentation, the twelve apostles on a grass base, with their large lilies of the valley among them. Above them, a white inscription band with their respective names. Dated 1667 below the handle. The lower rim is additionally bordered with a serrated silver band. The silver lid is indistinctly marked.
The thumb rest bears the remnants of an engraved alliance coat of arms. A comparable tankard with apostles is in the collection of the Krügemuseum (Mug Museum) in Creußen.
