Pencil and watercolor on paper. 41 x 30 cm (passe-partout cut-out). Signed and dated lower right: A Schönn 1870 (pencil). Framed in a mat and under glass, and described as such.
After studying at the Vienna Academy, Alois Schönn was the first Austrian painter to undertake several extended study trips to North Africa, the Balkans and Anatolia on his own initiative. These journeys left a lasting impression on the artist, who subsequently devoted himself to exploring Oriental themes for the rest of his life. Schönn's paintings became renowned for his ability to imbue the depicted scenes with local charm and color, without losing sight of the characteristic features of each country and its inhabitants.
