Ron Arad
Split Chair Prototype

Design circa 1989. Two-part construction in cast aluminum and European walnut. 76 x 60/64 x 55 cm.

This prototype was created at Pesch in Cologne, in collaboration between Ron Arad and a development team from the Pesch company. Only about three examples were produced before it was realized in a small series by Poltronova. The chair offered here was purchased directly from the Pesch showroom.

The designer and artist Ron Arad is one of the most influential figures in contemporary furniture design. His work is characterized by an experimental exploration of material, form, and construction, questioning both industrial processes and traditional furniture typologies.

The 'Split Chair' occupies a special place within his oeuvre. As a radical reinterpretation of the chair, Arad deconstructs the familiar form into a dynamic, fragmented structure that combines function and sculpture. The object exemplifies his design approach, in which the boundaries between design and art are deliberately dissolved. In its experimental openness, the prototype points to central themes in Arad's work: transformation, deconstruction, and the extension of the functional object to an autonomous plastic form.
